What to Do After a Car Accident

A car accident is stressful, and it’s easy to forget what to do in the moment. Having a simple checklist in mind helps you stay safe, protect yourself, and make the insurance process smoother.

In the first few minutes

  1. Check for injuries. Your safety and everyone else’s comes first.
  2. Get to safety. If the cars are drivable and it’s safe, move them out of traffic. Turn on hazard lights.
  3. Call 911 if anyone is hurt or there’s significant damage. In many places a police report is required — and it helps your claim.

At the scene

  1. Exchange information with the other driver: name, phone, insurance company and policy number, license plate, and vehicle details.
  2. Document everything. Take photos of all vehicles, damage, the road, license plates, and any visible injuries. Note the time, location, and weather.
  3. Get witness info if anyone saw what happened.
  4. Don’t admit fault. Even a casual “I’m sorry” can be used against you. Stick to the facts and let the insurers determine fault.

Within a day or two

  1. File your claim with your insurer as soon as possible. Share your photos and the police report number.
  2. Keep records of medical visits and repair estimates.
  3. Get a repair estimate from a shop you trust, in addition to any the insurer arranges.

Should you file a claim?

For minor damage, weigh the repair cost against your deductible and the potential premium increase. For anything significant, or anything involving injuries or another party, file the claim.

After the dust settles

An at-fault accident can raise your premium for a few years. When that happens, it’s a good time to compare quotes — insurers weigh accidents differently, and another carrier may offer a better rate.

The bottom line

Stay safe, document thoroughly, don’t admit fault, and file your claim promptly. And once your rate is affected, comparing quotes is the fastest way to keep your premium in check.
